Social Networks Leaking Users Data To Tracking Sites

"Many popular social networking sites typically make personal information available to companies that track users' browsing habits and allow them to link anonymous browsing habits to specific people, according to a new study by the Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI).
"When you sign up with a social networking site, you are assigned a unique identifier," says Craig Wills, professor of computer science at WPI.
"This is a string of numbers or characters that points to your profile. We found that when social networking sites pass information to tracking sites about your activities, they often include this unique identifier. So now a tracking site not only has a profile of your Web browsing activities, it can link that profile to the personal information you post on the social networking site. Now your browsing profile is not just of somebody, it is of you."
"Social networks use third-party tracking sites to learn about the browsing habits of their users. Cookies are managed by a browser and contain information that allows tracking sites to build profiles of the websites visited by a user. Each time a user visits a new website, the tracking site can review those cookies to offer ads that might be relevant to the user.
"Wills says social networks go to far by allowing the transmission of unique identifiers. "Users put a lot of information about themselves on social networking sites," said Wills.
"A lot of that information can be seen by other users, by default. There are mechanisms users can use to limit access to their information, but we found through previous research that most users don't take advantage of them."
"With a unique identifier tracking sites could gain access to a users personal information. Wills says this could lead to having one's identity linked to inaccurate browsing profiles, depending on how many people use the same computer.
"Tracking sites don't have the ability to know if, for example, a site about cancer was visited out of curiosity, or because the user actually has cancer," said Wills. "Profiling is worrisome on its own, but inaccurate profiling could potentially lead to issues with employment, health care coverage, or other areas of our personal lives."
"Once someone is in possession of your unique identifier, there is so much they can learn about you. And even if tracking sites do not use the information themselves, can they guarantee that it will never find its way into other hands? For these reasons, we feel this issue is something that we should to be concerned about."

Organization of Animation

The basics of scripts are the cornerstone of HTML. Scripts are mini-programs that allow your web page to have interactive features and be interpreted by your web browser. Proper organization and usage of animated scripts can enhance your web page. Improper use can distract and prevent sales.
1. Scripts, JavaScript, .Gif, & .Jpeg:
Automatic Scripts are executed by the browser and require no activity by the viewer. For example: mouse-overs, where you only hold your cursor over the image/link to see an 'Automatic Script.' In comparison, Trigger Scripts require "triggering" by the viewer, thus having to "click" on a link in order to implement the activity of a JavaScript, thus being a 'Trigger Script.'
Most scripts are written in JavaScript because it is universally supported by the majority of browsers. Some examples of JavaScript are images of waves of water, moving objects, display messages, etc. Another form of interactive graphics is accomplished through animated .gif files. The advantage of .gif over .jpeg is that .gif produces animation.

2. Compress for Faster Loading:
To reduce loading time, use graphic compression. This does not have to mean loss of quality. Certain percentages of compression are not even noticeable. Use smaller graphics toward top of pages; larger graphics toward the bottom.

3. Organize to Compliment, not Distract:
Organize your animated scripts so that they compliment your page, not distract. Don't lose potential customers with too much "cuteness." Also, organize your designs with pleasing colors and acceptable animation. Gaudy, unprofessional scripts will not enhance your sales or reputation.
4. Use Animation Sparingly & Avoid Blinking Scripts:
Using animation sparingly not only reduces loading time, but also prevents turning away potential customers. A cluttered web page is confusing and irritating. The general online audience does not care for flashing and blinking images. They can be considered annoying and distracting. Many readers will leave a web site due to such - thus, a possible customer is lost from that web site!
Another awareness about Flashing & Blinking animation is that there is medical belief that flashing/blinking images can trigger epileptic seizures in viewers who are subject to this difficulty. It's good to be aware and courteous!
5. Example of a JavaScript:
An example of a simple JavaScript is adding the date and time to your page. To view this script, go to the bottom of our home page: http://www.vectorcentral.com where you will find a script from Rewritables - a free script.
Important Tips:
Tip #1 - To use a script, highlight the "entire" code.
Copy and paste the code into your text editor (like WordPad, NotePad, NoteTab). Then, "recopy" from your text editor. Paste the "recopied" script into your HTML page. This "important" process keeps the code pure and unaltered.
Tip #2 - Place your script in its own table.
In your text view, sometimes there is what looks like empty space at the end of the script. To remove this space will delete the end of your code, thus destroying your script. Having your script in its own table will remind you 'not' to remove that empty-looking area below your script.
