If you’re a person that has a garden of any kind or even if you don’t, you’ll still be familiar with the term weeds. Weeds are the bane of any garden owner. People will quickly run for the best brush cutter to get rid of them. Many of us don’t know much about these plants, but all we know is that they are bad and they should be destroyed. Beyond that, many don’t know much. Let’s spend the next few minutes trying to learn a bit more about these plants and whether they’re as bad as people make them sound.

What Are They, and Are They Bad?

It’s hard to define what a weed is as many people will call different plants, weeds. You see a weed is a plant that grows where it’s not supposed to. This will depend with the person. For instance, some people love dandelions, but to others they are weeds that should be removed from their gardens.

This can simply be summarized as a weed like beauty depends on the eyes of the beholder. These plants are not particularly bad. We shall expound on this later. All we can say for now is that a weed is bad if it overpowers the plants that you are trying to grow. This differs from person to person and what they are growing in their gardens.

The Different Types of Weeds

This is a very large topic to really talk about, but in simple terms there are two types of weeds. Weeds can be perennial or annual. Annual weeds are the ones that are easier to deal with. This is because these weeds have a life cycle just like any other plant. The cycle for these plants are seeds, then flower and back to seed. This cycle can happen several times in one year, so you can expect these to grow a lot more and a lot faster as well.

On the other hand, perennial weeds are a whole another story. These are the pesky ones that are hard to remove. This is because of their ability to grow from parts of the root that are left behind in addition to the seeding cycle that it follows as well. These types of weeds would normally require for the entire plant including the roots to be properly removed. It’s the only way to stop them from growing.

The Weeds You Should Have in Your Garden

Despite the common misconceptions, not all weed is bad for your garden. There are some that can actually be good and even beneficial for your garden. Here are some of the weeds that you should consider when gardening:

Broad Leaf Plantain

This weed is among the many that you should let grow in your garden. This is because it has medicinal properties and is also edible. On top of that, it also accumulates nutrients such as calcium, iron and magnesium that’s good for your soil.

Dandelion

This beautiful plant is known and adored by many. This is probably one of the few weed plants that people choose not to cut off when it pops up in their garden. This plant can attract the nice insects such as ladybugs that can help with pollination. On top of that, it also has deep roots that can accumulate potassium, calcium, copper and iron among many others. These nutrients are quite good for your soil and plants in the long run.

White Clover

Finally, the last beneficial weed plant on our list. The white clover normally shows up in soil that’s lacking in nitrogen. It’s kind of a nitrogen fixer. The plant contains bacteria in its roots that can help convert the nitrogen in the atmosphere into a usable form in the soil. It also accumulates nitrogen and attracts the beneficial insects that help with pollination. All this can help with your garden.

As you can tell, some of the weeds are beneficial because they help enrich the soil and plants around them. One important thing you need to note is that make sure that the weeds don’t overpower your plants. You need to keep a balance between the weeds and the plants you grow as well. There are more beneficial weeds, but we feel that these are the more common.

How to Prevent or Kill Weeds

As we have seen previously, there is really no need to kill every weed in your garden. If you still feel inclined to do so, then you’ll be happy to know that there are some best brush cutters that you could use to help with that. Some other methods that you can consider are such as manually removing the weeds, mulching and the cover crop method to name a few.
