Follow These Tips On How To Be Happy In Life

If you ask anyone what they want in life, the answer you’re most likely to get is “To be happy.” But not a lot of people actually know what will make them happy. For many, it’s winning the lottery. And for some, it’s as simple as eating a scoop of ice cream on a hot summer day. But external joys usually bring in momentary happiness – something that’s fleeting and not long lasting. If you’re one of the majority of people asking what you need to do to be happy, here are 10 habits of happy people you should start doing now:

1. Be Present
Don’t regret the past – it’s over and done with and you can’t do anything about it. Let it go and move on. Don’t worry about the future either – you can’t control what will happen in the next two hours. To be happy, you must be present in the moment. Take the time to smell the flowers and enjoy the sunshine. If you have kids, take that pen down and spend some time with them – you won’t be able to do that when they’re already teenagers. Enjoy the moment, let go of the past, and stop worrying about the future.

2. Be Grateful
Sure, you may not have a mansion or a beach house, but you’ve got a roof on your head. Sure, you don’t have the career that you want, but at least you have a stable job. Be thankful for what you have and don’t focus on what you don’t have. See the positive things in your life, be grateful, and more good things will come.

3. Think of Your Happy Place
If your boss just screamed at you for missing a deadline, breathe and think of your happy place. It could be that secluded beach you went to last year, your bed, your spouse, or that high end shoe store where you bought your favourite pair of boots. Whenever life brings you down, think about your happy place and you’ll instantly feel better.

4. Accept What You Can’t Control
There are many things in the world that you can’t control – it’s time you accept that. If your spouse really can’t understand that 1pm is 1pm, then accept that he or she may have a different perspective of time. So if he’s always 30 minutes late, learn to adjust your own time and work around it – there’s no need to make a big deal out of something you know you can’t change.

5. Act Like a Child
This doesn’t mean you have an excuse to throw tantrums when you don’t get what you want. This simply means that you should have the same enthusiasm in life just like a child does. When you give a toddler a gift or a toy, how do they react? Get excited about life and the little things in life – it doesn’t take much to be happy. Find the amazing things in the world around you and you’ll realize that life is actually more than what it seems.

6. Spend Time with Pets
The psychological and physical effects of having pets have been studied and known to bring positive results to people. If you have a dog, take him out on a walk and let him lead. If he’s running in the park, run with him, too. Enjoy the company of pets and reap the benefits to your health and well-being.

7. Do Something for Someone Else
Giving your time to someone in need is one of the most effective ways to feel better in seconds. When you know you have value to someone, you’ll instantly value yourself. It can be as simple as helping your child with his homework or walking an old lady cross the street. One of the best ways to be happy in life is finding your purpose – start by helping others.

8. Enjoy a Hobby
It could be finger painting, pottery, or playing the guitar. With all the stresses of family and work life, you need to have some time with yourself and enjoying something that you love doing. Take the time to enjoy a hobby that you really love and make sure you do it on a regular basis.

9. Write
If you had a hard day – write about it. Bottling up emotions is dangerous to your emotional health. It can lead to stress and eventually, a major nervous breakdown. If you can’t talk about it with another person, then write it down – it’s cathartic and therapeutic. You get to let go of negative thoughts and emotions as if you’re cleaning out your mind of all its toxicity.

10. Discover Your Roots
Get to know where you came from and discover who your ancestors were. By knowing where you came from, you get to have a sense of humility and pride altogether.

Happy people aren’t the richest people in the world – in fact, many of the world’s wealthiest actually suffer from sadness or depression. Happiness isn’t about material things but rather an inner peace and confidence that everything is going to be okay. It’s also about being content and appreciating what you have right now. No amount of money or fame will give you your happiness – you yourself have the power to make yourself happy with the right thoughts and the right attitude. Therefore, it is important to learn the habits of happy people and follow them each and every day.
